Vat Souvanna Khilli
ວັດສຸວັນນະຄີຣີ
The "Temple of the Golden Mountain" in the heart of Luang Prabang's old town was founded by Phuan citizens from Xieng Khouang in 1773 to honour the marriage between the Phuan king Chao Kham Sattha and the daughter of Luang Prabang's King Inthasom. The sim design is unusual in that the main Buddha image is housed in an annex. Wat Khilli is ritually considered the head of the town and at Phi Mai the town procession stops here.
Within the monastery grounds is a two storey kuti that since 2006 has been the offices of the Buddhist Heritage Project founded by Pha Khamchan Virachitta Maha Thela, the late abbot of Vat Sene, and artist/photographer Hans Georg Berger.
