Vat Phanom Nakharam

The village of Ban Phanom is famous for its Thai Lue heritage reflected in the continuation of traditional weaving, metal working and dancing. The temple at Ban Phanom also maintains many traditions of the Thai Lue. Noteworthy is the two storey kuti in mixed Lao-colonial style, similar to Sala Thammavihan at Vat Souvanna Khilli. It was built by the senior Thai Lue abbot Pha Chanpheng Chanthasaroh (b.1900-d.1978) who developed a talent for building works. The sim here was rebuilt as we see it today under his direction during the 1950's. He also supervised the renovation of That Mak Mo at Vat Visoun, the rebuilding of the standing Buddha at Vat Sene, and the restoration of the main Buddha image at Vat That Luang. His remains are interred in the stupa here to the left of the sim, facing his famous kuti.
