Located on the road out to Ban Phanom this monastery is most notable for its large golden stupa "Phra That Khong Santi Chedi" or Peace Stupa which is clearly visible from Luang Prabang town a couple of kilometres away. Santi Chedi, designed by the artist Acharn Manivong Khattiyarat (1929-2014), was built between 1969 and 1987 by Sathu Saisamut Sotikathera to mark the end of the civil war. Sathu Saisamut Sotikathera himself was a master of "Vipassana" forest meditation and had studied in Burma for several years. The Santi Chedi was built in Burmese style to reflect this heritage.
The main monastery buildings can be found further down the hill. This forest monastery was at one time home to a large community of nuns. [The Lao Sangha and Modernity]
