Temples

Vat Nong Sa Keo
ວັດໜອງສະແກ້ວ

located high on a mountain slope across the Mekong river from Luang Prabang, "The Temple of the Diamond Pond" is believed to date back to 1657, its peaceful location making it ideal for meditation. Legend also says that when King Setthathirath built Vat Xieng Thong in the early 1560's, the local people were asked to contribute money, gold and precious stones towards the construction. But when they went to make their donation they found that the new temple was already built. Disappointed and upset they are said to have thrown all the riches into the pond Nong Sa Keo.

Prince Phetsarath was ordained here in 1912 but after1920 Vat Nong Sa Keo fell into neglect apparently because of the controversial ordination here of princess Chao Ying Kham Vaen [FB ມໍຣະດົກໂລກ ຫຼວງພະບາງ / Luang Prabang World Heritage Site]. In recent years much restoration work has taken place.
