Vat Long Khoun Srikhounnaram
ວັດລ້ອງຄູນ ສີຄູນນາຣາມ
Restored during reign of King Anourouth (r.1791 - 1815), Vat Long Khoun located across the Mekong Rover from Luang Prabang town was used as a place of religious retreat by Luang Prabang's leading monks and members of the royal family. The interior of the sim is decorated with Siamese stye murals depicting 10 Jataka stories. The entrance is guarded by paintings of Chinese stye warriors. According to legend these were painted by Chinese "Haw" rebels in 1887 (Read the history here) to protect them from evil spirits that were disturbing their sleep. The front porch was added to the sim in 1937 [Anicent Luang Prabang & Laos].
Within the monastery grounds are several elegant kuti buildings dating to the 1930's. One is now dedicated to the memory of Somdet Phayod Keow, the last Supreme Patriarch of Laos prior to the revolution, who was a novice and monk here from 1904 to 1936.
A rare Walking Meditation Hall is still found here, a long narrow hall in which monks can walk up and down without distraction [c.f. Vat Had Siew] [The Quiet in the Land, Francis Engelmann]
After many years of neglect the monastery underwent restoration in the late 1980's/early 1990's but again fell into disrepair before a further restoration in 2022.
