Vat Chomphet sits prominently atop a hill across the Mekong River from Luang Prabang town. It was founded in 1888 by the Siamese military commander Chaophraya Surasakmontri whilst he was stationed in Luang Prabang to suppress the Chinese Haw, who had sacked the town the previous year. The ceiling is still stencilled with dragons and swans, auspicious animals for Chaophraya Surasakmontri.
Vat Chomphet became an important royal temple used during coronation ceremonies. The two stupas at the rear of the sim contain the remains of King Ounkham (r. 1868 - 1895) and his mother Princess Khammoun. The temple and stupas are in a state of considerable disrepair but some restoration work has commenced in late 2023.
